Povzetek
WCTE 2004 is the 8th in series of World Conferences on Timber Engineering previously held in Seattle (1988), Tokyo (1990), London (1991), New Orleans (1996), Montreux (1998), Whistler (2000) and Shah Alam (2002). Conferences have gradually assumed a regular path being organised at two years intervals. The location has been agreed to circulate on the globe following the path Europe-America- other continents. The conference has established itself as the leading global scientific timber construction conference. WCTE 2004 is organised in Lahti, Finland. The organisers received more than 400 abstracts. The programme allows a presentation of 10 keynote addresses, 190 oral papers and 140 posters. The international nature of the conference is well demonstrated by the top-5 list of countries as to the number of papers (amount of oral speeches): USA (25), Japan (21), Germany (20), Sweden (15) and Canada (13). We expect the number of participants to exceed 500 representing 38 countries. Papers cover a wide scope of timber engineering. More than one session is organised on following topics: - Connections - Performance of shear walls - Seismic action - Timber building systems - Performance of composite structures - Design methods - Glue-laminated structures - Bridges - Grading and non-destructive testing - Durability - Fire resistance of timber buildings In this conference, one day is reserved for wood architecture. This is a joint action with the Finnish organisation Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award which is devoted to rewarding wood architecture. The winner of the prize of 2004 is Richard Leplastrier from Australia. In addition, the conference organisers have called for proposals for a Wood-Architect-Engineer-team prize. The winner of the prize is a German team from Dresden with Pedestrian bridge in Tharandt Botanic garden represented by professor Peer Haller. Both winners have a keynote presentation in the conference The conference is organised by the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers RIL, Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT and Wood Focus.
